What our client’s DON’T want to hear (in a hilarious video)
Ever felt like you talk in therapy speak?
I\’ve been accused of this from several of my close friends and family members and I will admit it, I do it. Lots of \”At least you have a job to go to\” or \”I\’m just happy to have a house to clean.\”
While these may be effective with small issues, most of the times our clients don\’t come to us unless things have really hit the fan.
Sometimes, we just have to acknowledge that life sucks. When our client\’s come in to our offices, they may be wanting answers but I\’ve found that more than that, they are wanting someone to go \”yea, I get you. I understand why you are the way you are. You are safe here.\”
If we aren\’t authentic, we risk sounding like this sketch from Key and Peele. Watch it. It\’s hilarious on so many levels. (You may have to sign in if you don\’t already have a Vimeo account, but it\’s worth it.)
Ok, now that you are back and I\’m assuming didn\’t get drawn into the hole of hilarious sketches from these guys, I do want to acknowledge that we do, at times, want to fix things for our clients and skim over the actual hurt and suckiness of life.
If I\’m honest, I\’m the first to want to jump in there and throw out a big fat reframe.
But our clients aren\’t always ready for this. Sometimes they just need a place to be. No reframing. No miracle questions. Just a place to rest their souls.
Here\’s your challenge- next time you want to jump in and fix things, don\’t. Just be and let the client heal.
