Back to the Basics – Week 4
Working With Young Children in the Tray... Does sandtray therapy even work with our littles?!
This is a topic that I get asked about a TON, and I am so excited to be talking with you about how to work with young children using sandtray therapy!
Often when we begin our sandtray sessions with a child, we try to approach it the same way that we would with an adult or teenage client. We may have a plan or a directive for the child to follow that is PERFECT for their situation/presenting problem…
…but then we get nothin\’…crickets…blank stares…maybe even some dysregulated behaviors, and we wonder, \”what in the world is going on?? Maybe sandtray doesn\’t work with these kids…\”
Well never fear! I\’m here to help guide you in the process so that you can feel confident when working with Littles in the tray.
Sandtray therapy may look a bit different when working with young children, but it is still a powerful tool you\’re going to want to have in your toolbox.
It\’s important to understand how and why it works for our littles, as well you\’re role in providing this safe space for the healing and rewiring of the brain that\’s going to happen!
The most important thing to remember is that kids don\’t really need an introduction to working in the sand. Play is a child\’s first language, and they will go where they need to without much (or any) direction from you… pretty cool huh?!
If you want to get a more in-depth look at how a sandtray session might look with younger children, and how to use those non-directive play therapy techniques, check out the video below!
