Using Directives in the Tray
Tips, Tools, and Insights to Increase Confidence When Using Directives
Working with our teen and adult clients in the sand can be SO challenging!
This older population can sometimes lack intuition where play is concerned, and may need help figuring out what to build, especially in the beginning of the sandtray process.
That\’s why it\’s great (but not essential) to have some directives queued up and ready to go, depending on the pain points, issues, or barriers your clients are facing.
But don\’t worry if you don\’t always have a plan or directive at the ready…
Often, the client\’s needs will be revealed during the beginning of the session, and you can craft the perfect directive for their current situation to help them address whatever barrier or difficulty they are facing.
And pro-tip: you may give a directive, and the client may go a completely different direction or discard your directive altogether…
Because as long as you are there holding space and providing that neuroception of safety, the brain will do what it needs to do, regardless of wether or not you have the perfect directive!
Isn\’t the brain amazing?!
